The longest time without an update since I've started this site... Shame on me, but I'm just not motivated enough anymore, and I've lost interest in fanfics a bit. However, I will definitely still do the extension of the site that will allow everyone to write reviews. Perhaps then I'll be a bit more motivated to continue writing reviews myself, when I don't anymore have to review all fics. Anyway, I hope nobody is angry at me for choosing this time to start attempting to make a bit of money off the site (I'm talking about the Amazon link in the navigation frame). Look at my Nadia site for an explanation.

By the way, I won't be able to keep this site running like this to for very much longer. My graduation is approaching slowly, and I won't have enough time for this when I have a job. Perhaps more importantly, the number of new fics has skyrocketed recently (which was only to be expected after the US broadcast) and I'm falling behind rapidly. And to be honest, I don't enjoy writing reviews as much as I used to; it's become too much of a chore. But don't worry, I won't just let the site fade away either. With the site now actually being dynamically generated online, there are definite new possibilities. What I'm most likely going to do is to have a system where everyone can write reviews. But on top of this, everyone also will be able to vote on reviews, so that bad reviews can be made less visible (review and reviewer lists could be ordered according to votes, and people could configure the site to show them only reviews with votes above a certain threshold). I'll probably going to keep writing reviews myself, just not as many. As for the timeframe, I'm definitely going to implement this before mid 2002, probably earlier, but not within the next 6 months. There might be fewer reviews from me before that, though.

Hi! I've arrived in Japan and settled in a bit. It is of course an anime fan's dream land, but I'm a bit short on money till I get my scholarship so I have to stick to manga for now. It takes me almost an hour to commute to and from university every day, but with my handheld PC I can fortunately make good use of that time by rehearsing kanji and (of course) reading fanfiction!

Important announcement, especially for authors:
Hi everyone! This weekend I finalized the restructuring of the site which I've been talking about. The underlying database changed quite a lot, but the reviews themselves look exactly the same as always. However, instead of the list of all fics sorted by author (which got too large), each author now has a page for her- or himself (start at the Author List to see them), that lists all of the reviews for that author's fics. Additionally, these pages can contain information about the author, such as real name, email address and homepage URL. However, I hope you'll understand that trying to gather this information for the (at the time of writing this) 199 authors of which I have fics reviewed is something I don't have the time for. Therefore, the authors themselves have to send me that information. If you are the author of a fic I reviewed, this text tells you how this is done.

Finally, the change to the new format might have caused problems, so if anything doesn't work, please tell me.

Let me tell you this: If you ever write a web interface to a database, never make the delete function accessable through a simple link, no matter how many warning pages you put before the actual delete. Well, this last review gives me the occasion to tell you something: the author is apparently spending a year in Japan right now, to return in October. Coincidentially, that's when I will go to Japan, also to stay for a year. Naturally, that will effect my webpage, though I can't yet tell how much. The main issues will be available time and write access to this webserver. In any case, before I gom I will do another major restructuring of this site that will give each author a separate page with all the fics written by him/her as well as (optional) other personal data. I'm still working on the implementation, but I don't have much time for it right now, so it might take another month or two.

Finally, there is another new website that reviews Tenchi fanfics on the links page.

In recent weeks, the fic Kanashii no Imi has caused quite a mess in the Tenchi fanfiction scene, including a "counterattack" called The Haunting. My own view of all this is rather opposite to that of the majority, therefore I decided to make it public and explain it at some length.

Actually, I'd have added those reviews yesterday, but once again, I just got an empty webpage for one of the reviews, just like I recently got for the links page. This was due to the shell script not checking whether a "new review" actually existed, and getting empty pages if it didn't. So a simple typo or a link to a non-review page like the links page would result in an empty page. I fixed the script and it now breaks off if a review doesn't exist. There also was a typo in the link to the Eva Fanfic Review Syndicate, which is corrected now.

I really had bad luck with these last two updates! First, a a bug in the shell script that copies new reviews to disk (forgot to use egrep when scanning for a regexp) caused the links page to be blank, then when I wanted to correct it on Monday, I forgot to copy the corrected page to the archive and then there was this ugly misspelling in the title of the Infinity Series... Well, I hope it's all right now.

Ta-dah! The SQL-based version of this webpage is finally completed, at least all the important parts! If you want to know more about that, read the technical notes. Even if not, it means a couple of improvements, namely a statistics page and direct links from the reviews and the title-ordered list to the right place in the author-ordered list. There is one disadvantage: as the lists are now sorted automatically, the sorting order has become strictly alphanumerical, which unfortunately means that "Chapter 10" comes before "Chapter 2" and "Chapters 3 - 5". I may change the titles (remove the "s" and add leading zeroes) eventually, to correct that. The same applies to the authors: Ryan Matthews is now placed next to Ryan Anderson instead of Greg Matteson. I don't think that's really a problem, so I won't do anything about it.

However, my programs may have true bugs, too, so if you spot any other sort of error, please tell me about it, so that I can correct it!
